Spiritual Awakening in Christ
Many people in our time speak about “awakening,” but the true awakening of the human soul is not found in philosophy, psychology, or mystical curiosity. The true awakening is awakening in Christ. It is the moment when the human heart, once asleep in the passions of the world, becomes alive again through the presence of the living God. Scripture teaches that humanity without Christ lives in a kind of spiritual sleep. The Apostle Paul writes: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” (Ephesians 5:14). This awakening is not merely emotional excitement or intellectual understanding; it is the rebirth of the soul through repentance, humility, and communion with God.
Christ Himself spoke of this awakening when He said, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” (John 3:3). The Lord reveals that the human person must pass from the old life into a new life. The old life is governed by ego, pride, anger, and the constant pursuit of worldly desires. The awakened life is governed by the Spirit of God. Saint Paul explains this transformation clearly: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Spiritual awakening therefore is not self-improvement; it is new life granted by Christ.
This awakening begins with repentance. When a person begins to see their sin clearly and turns toward God with humility, the eyes of the soul begin to open. Christ proclaimed at the beginning of His ministry: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17). Repentance is not merely feeling bad about sin; it is a change of direction of the heart. It is the moment when a person stops living for themselves and begins living for God. The early Apostolic Church understood repentance as the doorway into illumination.
The awakened Christian also begins to see the world differently. Before awakening, the world seems permanent and powerful. After awakening, the believer sees that earthly life is temporary and that the Kingdom of God is the true reality. Saint Paul reminds us: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2). The awakened mind begins to seek the will of God in all things, and the believer gradually becomes aligned with Christ’s teaching in the Sermon on the Mount.
Another sign of spiritual awakening is the purification of the heart. Jesus said: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8). As the soul awakens, the Holy Spirit begins to cleanse the inner life. The believer becomes more aware of pride, anger, jealousy, and selfishness. Instead of defending these things, the awakened soul begins to surrender them to God. This process is slow and requires prayer, fasting, humility, and participation in the sacramental life of the Church.
The Eucharist plays a central role in this awakening. Christ said: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:54). In the Apostolic Church, spiritual awakening was never separated from the Eucharistic life. The believer awakens through union with Christ, and this union is deepened through the Holy Communion. Through the Eucharist the believer receives the life of Christ Himself.
Prayer also sustains this awakened state. Christ taught His disciples to remain watchful: “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.” (Matthew 26:41). In the ancient Church this watchfulness was the constant guarding of the heart. The awakened believer learns to keep the mind centered on Christ, repeating prayer, meditating on Scripture, and resisting the distractions that darken the soul.
Finally, spiritual awakening leads to transformation into the likeness of Christ. The Apostle Paul writes: “We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” (2 Corinthians 3:18). Awakening is therefore not a single moment but the beginning of a lifelong journey. As the believer walks with Christ, the soul gradually becomes filled with divine light, love, humility, and peace.
In our Catholidox understanding of the Apostolic faith, spiritual awakening is simply the soul returning to its true purpose: union with Christ and life in His Kingdom. The awakened Christian lives in repentance, prayer, sacramental communion, and obedience to the teachings of Jesus. When this awakening spreads among believers, the Church itself becomes radiant again, just as it was in the days of the Apostles.
Therefore let every believer hear the call of Scripture: “It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep, for salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:11). May our hearts awaken fully to Christ, that we may walk in His light, carry our cross with humility, and be transformed into His likeness until the day we stand before Him in the Kingdom of Heaven.
